Works without them although you have to carefully insert the card stock straight because if you go too fast the cards can come out skewed, check last photos of some cut wrong. I have 3 of the small receiver trays and the 1 end plate included message if you want any of them separate. I put the cut cards into them at the end of video. Usually they just fall right into them if you have the large catch tray.
