There are a total of 75 pieces: a partial uppercase letter set (missing D, E, and Y), a single number, and some punctuation/special characters. The As are marked WM. We believe this to be a very rare set of Wm. Aetna Double Extra Condensed Class C wood type as found on p. 13 of the 1878 specimen book Specimens of Wood Type Manufactured by the Wm. Page Wood Type Co. It is a sheared serif typeface. Page is credited with having designed Aetna in 1870 so this example may be among the earliest examples of this typeface to be found. As would be expected, the set overall exhibits wear appropriate with its age with individual pieces varying in condition, and some or all of them having some or all of the following: general wear, chips, scratches, nicks, dents, gouges, edge wear, dirty and/or stained areas, marks, discoloration, vestigial ink, etc. A few of the pieces also have some large missing pieces of wood from the side areas. We are unsure as to what type of wood the set is made from. The set weighs roughly 1 lb 12 oz.
