There are a total of 118 pieces that appear to come from multiple sets. 14 contains sets that appear to be comprised of many of the same pieces as our lot, or essentially the same pieces, as is the case with the 25-piece wood pointer sets described below. We therefore used the Hamilton examples as reference wood pointers on p. 4 and extension dashes/dashes on p. We believe these came from at least 6 different sets. The manifest to the best of our abilities is as follows: a partial set (20 of 25) of large 5-line wood pointers (12 of 12 large pieces, 5 of 6 medium pieces, 3 of 7 small pieces); a complete set (25 of 25) of 2-line wood pointers (12 of 12 large pieces, 6 of 6 medium pieces, 7 of 7 small pieces); another nearly complete set (24 of 25) of 2-line wood pointers (11 of 12 large pieces, 6 of 6 medium pieces, 7 of 7 small pieces); an additional (5) miscellaneous duplicate 2-line pointer pieces; (3) beautiful 2-line dashes, 2 ornamented with stars; (5) star-adorned 2-line pointers; (10) unusual 3-line ornaments with shamrock-like shapes set in different shapes (circle, pair of diamonds, pair of irregular hexagons, and 4 octagons); (22) nice 2-line extension dashes of varying design (6 different styles); and finally (4) circular 2-line ornaments. This is an outstanding lot. Rarely do you see such large groupings offered, and it is even more uncommon to find sets that are complete or nearly complete. Aside from the Hamilton examples noted above, we found several others in the early wood type catalogs we found: p. 11 of the 1878 specimen book Specimens of Wood Type Manufactured by the Wm. Page Wood Type Co. 62 of the 1890 Condensed Specimen Book of Wood Type Manufactured by Morgans & Wilcox Manfg Co. 73 of the 1897 Wood Type, American Type Founders Company. We believe the pieces from this lot date between the 1860s and the early 1900s based on the other type specimens it was found with (see our other listings to view the entire collection and the original type cabinet in which this set was housed). We welcome any information that might help us to definitively identify the maker or makers. As would be expected, the grouping overall exhibits wear appropriate with its age with individual pieces varying in condition, and some or all of them having some or all of the following: general wear, chips, scratches, nicks, dents, gouges, edge wear, bowing, dirty and/or stained areas, marks, discoloration, vestigial ink, adhered paper remnants on reverse, etc. One of the pieces also has a large missing piece of wood from the side area. We are unsure as to what type of wood or woods the sets are made from. The lot weighs roughly 1 lb 15 oz.
