Title of your page goes here. Photoengraving Procedures Equipment Processes Letterpress Printing. This is a 334 page, 9 3/8 x 11 1/4, hardcover book titled and subtitled Modern Photoengraving / A Practical Textbook on Latest American Procedures. The book was written by Louis Flader and J. Mertle and was copyrighted and publish4ed in 1948 by Modern Photoengraving Publishers. Though not stated, this is a first edition. From the Authors Preface It is strange but true, that no standardized or systematic course or method of training beginners in photoengraving has ever been devised. Apprentices entering a photoengraving establishment are usually designated to learn and perfect themselves in but one branch of the craft. They are left largely upon their own resources to acquire the necessary kno9wlwdge and understanding and to develop their skill to the point where they become competent craftsmen. There has been no source at which they could obtain that information so necessary to complete understanding, and no study course in the science and practice of photoengraving has been available. Beginners learn by observation and imitation and by trial and error method, so costly and time-consuming. Letterpress printing in all its branches has also experienced many changes and improvements through the years, and today there is present a high degree of specialization, calling for intimate knowledge outside of photoengraving on the part of those who produce photoengraved printing plates. Specialization has also had its effect upon photoengravers, many of whom are perhaps expert in their respective branch, but know little or nothing about the branches of photoengraving which precede and follow their own in the process of production. The tendency to over-specialization is strong, and while no doubt this results in certain economies in shop procedure, a complete basic understanding of all branches of photoengraving is essential to every process engaged in the production of photoengravings. It is the ambition of the authors to place before those interested in a complete description of every part of the photoengraving process, including all the variations thereof in practice at this writing… This book will be equally useful to beginners and advanced workers.
